OQHA Trail Ride:
I want to thank Airlie Farm for allowing us to be part of their family for a day. Sunriver Stables and Jon & Jackie Russell for sponsoring our saddle raffle. Thank You to Weyerhauser Timber Co. and Tim Tompkins for all his help and to the OQHA Trail Ride Committee for all their hard work. Thanks to Chance Kishpaugh for providing us with beautiful pictures. This is the third year Chance has been our photographer. And, our first buckle winner!! He walked the whole trail to get the best pictures!!! And, most of all Thank You to all who attended the 5th annual OQHA Trail Ride. Without the trail riders we would not have a RIDE. OET & Valley View Riders were well represented. Once again Whitney Hinkle & Cathy Phillips attended the ride. They have been at all 5 of the rides. Bless their hearts!! And I want to thank Troy Sells with Nutrena for coming even though he showed up after the last trailer went home. He had some problems and missed the ride but he is early for next year. He did get some of Nancy Petterson's wonderful cake!! Thank you to all of our sponsors of the prizes, we would not be able to host such a wonderful activity with out you. We had one gentleman who is a diabled Vet that made us hand engraved glasses with the OQHA emblem on them and a reiner( my choice). He says making the glasses keeps him out of the bars! LOL> We had a new Trail Boss this year, Sue Fox. She helped form the loop for the trail and made sure it was safe and helped prepare the food. Great gal, hard worker. Thank You TRAIL BOSS. If I have forgot any one I am so sorry, let me know I will do better next time.
We had a fantastic Trail Ride at Airlie Farm. What a day!!! Joe & Nancy Petterson own this beautiful AQHA breeding farm and B & B. We started the day with home made cinnamon rolls plus fresh coffee. After the riders signed in they got fed! Then it was off to ride thru the back of Airlie Farm onto Weyerhauser Timberland and onto a beautiful view of the valley of farms and vineyards. WHAT A VIEW!! The weather was perfect, not hot, not cold no rain during the ride. Although the ride was not very long it seems all had a good time. Whitney Hinkle even rode it twice. There were 67 riders, one person who came and waited for her husband to ride and had lunch with us and 3 who did not show. All in all a very good turn out. Once again every one went home with a prize. The Poker table was a big hit. The person who won the saddle was not there but boy is she happy. Her name is Kathy Stephens of Colton Oregon. She bought the ticket at the Molalla Buckaroo ride. Trina Brotherton of Dallas was our buckle winner. The committee had stopped at a Veterinary Clinic on the way out of Dallas a few weeks before the ride. We put up a poster and flyers. We were stopping for directions. Well long story short the Vet there came to the ride and won the buckle. How cool is that!! I am sorry I did not get the name of there person who won the Beach House stay, I think she is one of the ladies from Newport. She was going to give the certificate to a friend. And now the best part-----"THE LUNCH"--!!!!! Provided by Nancy Petterson of Airlie Farm. Holey Cow can she cook!!!. That was the best lunch of fresh fruit, home made pasta salad, a wonderful hoagie sandwich and The Cake!!. She did something that made it melt in you mouth. FANTASTIC. Like I said Troy got a piece 1 hr after the ride was over. He is no dummy!! For one day everyone was family. We all hung out, laughed and cried at bit when we gave Nancy a gift basket. So, for all of you that said you were coming to the ride and didn't- BOY DID YOU MISS OUT!!!!!!
Well that is it. Take care and onto next year. Linda Preble, Rochelle Kishpaugh, Patricia Hartman, Darrell Kishpaugh, Gary Hartman, Dayton Preble--- your OQHA Ride committee.
Member News:

November National Director Message
Hello! My name is Heather Thrapp and I am your newest AQHA National Director for Oregon.
For those who don’t know me, let me introduce myself. I reside in Eagle Point, OR, with my husband, Stephen Mauck. My first year of OQHA membership was 1979, when I competed in the 11 & Under Youth Division, with my horse, Mackinaw. I continued my path with American Quarter Horses, going on to compete in the Amateur Division, and, in 1995, became a professional in the industry. In 2006, I was chosen from Region One applicants to participate in the AQHA’s Leadership Program. From that moment, I determined that I wanted to become an AQHA Committee Member and then an AQHA Director.
For the last three years, I have served on the Foundation Committee. If you are not familiar with what the American Quarter Horse Foundation does, let me tell you. The AQHF provides Educational Scholarships to the youth of our Association, financially supports Equine Research, financially supports Therapeutic Riding endeavors and helps Preserve and Record the history of the American Quarter Horse breed.
My job, as a National Director, is to be available to and help the AQHA members of Oregon, with any AQHA matters you may have, and be involved with the Oregon affiliate. I want to encourage all members to get involved in this industry, in some capacity – helping at a show, volunteering time to work with a committee, helping our Youth or helping the local youth, in your community, through 4-H or FFA. It all helps and it all comes back around!
Here are some important upcoming deadlines for AQHA Members:
- December 1, 2009 – AQHF Scholarship applications due
- December 31, 2009 – Rule changes due
If I can be of help to you, in any way, please do not hesitate to call me at 541.261.3253 or email me at
longtrot@wildblue.net . I look forward to meeting and working with you.
Have a great Thanksgiving!
Heather Thrapp
